Behind the Lens: A Retro Glam Moment at Vandervoort Studio

There’s a unique electricity that pulses through the walls of Vandervoort Studio when a great team comes together. That’s exactly what happened during a recent photo shoot by acclaimed photographer Geoff Green (@ggreennyc), who brought his signature bold and cinematic style to our daylight photo studio in Brooklyn.

Shot for an upcoming editorial project, the series featured talent Vanessa Cruz (@vanessacruzv) and Tommy Clune (@tommy_clune), captured in a moody black-and-white aesthetic that echoes old Hollywood with a modern twist. This striking session unfolded inside our open loft studio, where 2,500 square feet of industrial space met the artistic vision of a crew set on telling a story through every frame.

From the moment the creative team stepped through our doors, they took full advantage of what Vandervoort offers: floor-to-ceiling windows with 180 degrees of natural light, a sleek concrete floor, and minimal backdrop—ideal for a clean, stylized setup. The production took place on a winter afternoon, with the soft, directional sunlight filtering through our southwest-facing windows, creating shadowplay that enhanced the vintage noir mood of the portraits.

The concept: intimacy meets irony. The chemistry between Vanessa and Tommy is palpable—think Bonnie and Clyde with a fashion twist. Green’s lens captured a story of casual cool, romantic tension, and playful contradictions. One moment they’re exuding effortless glam, the next they’re locked in a candid smirk or shadowy stillness.

The creative direction was led by DeShawn Oravetz (@deshawno) and Sierra Long (@sierralongg), who channeled a blend of downtown cool and timeless elegance in both staging and tone. It was about more than just a look—it was about energy, movement, and mood.

Styling was intentionally minimal to keep the focus on the talent’s dynamic and facial expressions. Hair by Virginia Gamez (@virginiagamezhair) had an undone, swept-back vibe, while makeup by Yumi Kaizuka (@yumikaizuka) leaned natural and dewy, adding subtle texture under harsh flash for dramatic effect.

The choice to shoot in black and white wasn’t an afterthought. Geoff Green’s background in analog photography and vintage portraiture influenced the decision to use stark lighting and deep contrast, pushing the emotion forward without the distraction of color. Vandervoort Studio’s natural concrete textures and neutral palette allowed the lighting and expressions to dominate, giving the final images a crisp, editorial finish.

What’s more, this shoot reflects why Vandervoort continues to be a trusted space for photographers looking for a versatile photo studio rental in NYC. Whether it’s a full-scale fashion editorial, a product launch, or an intimate portrait session, our daylight loft is adaptable by design. We regularly host a wide range of projects that embrace both minimalism and maximalism—from high-concept art direction to spontaneous test shoots.

For this session, the team used a combination of continuous lighting and flash, balancing daylight and strobe to maintain sharp highlights while capturing spontaneous movement. Our space’s open layout and blackout capability allowed full control over light shaping—especially important for contrast-heavy monochrome setups like this one.

At Vandervoort, shoots like this one exemplify the creative diversity we welcome through our doors. We’re more than a backdrop—we’re part of the storytelling. And as always, it’s an honor to watch these visual narratives unfold under our roof.

Whether you’re planning your next editorial, campaign, or concept shoot, our Brooklyn photo studio offers the scale, lighting, and flexibility to bring your vision to life.
