Black & Light: A Striking Editorial Story Shot at Vandervoort Studio

Vandervoort Studio recently played host to a powerful and poetic portrait session led by photographer Evan Browning, in collaboration with stylist and creative partner Eric McNeal. Brought to life inside our daylight photo studio in Brooklyn, the project brought together a dynamic team of emerging voices and established talents to explore presence, heritage, and quiet elegance through fashion and form.

This shoot, staged in our sun-filled loft studio, took full advantage of the space’s 14-foot ceilings, soft concrete textures, and wraparound southeast and southwest daylight. Known for its unobstructed, natural light and minimalist industrial aesthetic, Vandervoort provided the perfect canvas for Browning’s nuanced visual storytelling — one that leaned into mood, shadow, and stillness.

The cast included a compelling mix of artists and creators: Yusuf Hassan, Taj Reed, Mario Milana, and Ethan Binnie, each bringing a distinct presence and narrative to the lens. Styled in refined layers of neutral suiting, the subjects embodied a sense of modern masculinity that is understated yet deeply expressive. The wardrobe, selected by McNeal and supported by assistant stylist Hassan Boone, channeled both restraint and richness — timeless silhouettes with textural depth, shot against our studio’s clean architectural lines.

Hair and makeup by Takamasa Nakamoto elevated the natural styling direction, with subtle grooming that highlighted the individuality of each model without overwhelming the soft, emotional tone of the photographs.

“Working at Vandervoort gave us room to breathe and focus,” says Browning. “The studio’s open layout and natural light allowed us to build an atmosphere of intimacy, where each subject could simply exist in front of the camera.”

McNeal adds, “We weren’t just styling clothing — we were styling a moment. Vandervoort helped make that moment feel real. Every part of the space contributed to the rhythm of the shoot, from the wide daylight windows to the quiet textures of the concrete floor.”

This shoot is part of a broader movement in fashion editorial that prioritizes sincerity over spectacle. At a time when high production can sometimes eclipse storytelling, this project leaned into simplicity, letting light, posture, and personality lead the frame.

Here at Vandervoort, we’re proud to offer more than just a place to shoot — we aim to provide a space that enhances the creative process. Our daylight photo studio in Brooklyn, NYC, is designed for versatility and clarity, making it a destination for editorial, fashion, portrait, and creative commercial work. With over 2,500 square feet of usable space, blackout capability, and direct rooftop access, we’ve become a favorite among photographers and stylists seeking light-rich environments in an adaptable loft setting.

This project with Evan Browning and Eric McNeal is a reminder of how the simplest conditions — good light, thoughtful styling, and genuine connection — can produce some of the most moving images. It’s also a celebration of collaboration, where each member of the team brought something essential to the table and trusted the space to hold it all.

Whether you’re a brand looking to craft a quiet moment of resonance or a creative team exploring identity through fashion, Vandervoort Studio is ready to meet you in the light.
